The winner of this week's STEM challenge is Rachel. My friend was very impressed by Rachel's perseverance as the Maltesers would not have been easy to manipulate as they would keep rolling all over the place. Perseverance and not giving up are key skills in STEM. Well done Rachel!!
I can't wait to see everyone's bridges this week.
The Big Rescue by Lucy.
The other day I had a surprise, I was sitting in my back garden when something fluffy flew down from the roof. At first I didn't know what it was but when I came closer I realised it was a blue tit fledgling! It must have been taking its first flight and landed in our garden! I could pick it up because it hadn't developed a fear of humans yet! We were afraid that my pet cat might attack it so I got my dad to put it up on the wall at the bottom of the garden. There was another bigger blue tit flying around trying to encourage it to fly. After few seconds it took flight to follow the adult!

Hello Girls,
Well our Easter holidays have come to an end and we would ,in normal circumstances, be ending back to school today to start our last term in 4th Class. Imagine!!. How time has flown since September!!!
You will definitely not forget 4th Class in a hurry. Anyway I ask each and every one of you to keep up all the hard work and effort you have put in over the last year and continue to work hard at home.
The curve has begun to flatten and hopefully we will all see each other soon again. For this to happen, we must keep up the social distancing and the hand washing. Hopefully we are in the home straight now.
I know you have all been doing great activities such as baking, reading, art, P.E, helping around the house and showing kindness to your parents and siblings so keep up that good work.
I have been reading a book by Marita Conlon McKenna about the famine so hopefully I will get that finished before I see you again. I have been working in my garden tidying up and planting seeds for the summer hopefully they will grow. The potatoes are planted and still alive. The Sweet Peas seedlings are coming along nicely and hopefully we can plant them in school when we go back.
In exciting news, I registered for a giveaway by Bressie (he does Meditation for Children and he has written books that are in our Calm Corner in school) and I am going to be sent an ukulele and I will be completing online lessons with a member of Bressie's band 'The Blizzards.'. Hopefully my playing will be better than my artistic skills!!! I will keep you up to date with that adventure!
I have included some STEM ideas on the class news section and I'm doing an online STEM course this week so hopefully I will get some nice ideas for when we go back to school. I would love you to try some of the STEM activities with your brothers/sisters and email me pictures to show how you got on. Agata and her brother designed their ideal playground and it looks fab.
On that topic, I now have a new email address specially for emails from you during this time at home so please use this now and NOT the other one you had been using. My email address is now : [email protected]
Finally, today (Monday) is a special day for a member of our class. It is Lara's 10th birthday today. Have a lovely day Lara and I hope you have lots of treats. I will be singing Happy Birthday to you so keep an ear out for that.
Missing you all and I'm looking forward to seeing you all again and hearing all your news. I bet I won't recognise you all as you'll have grown so tall. I have been talking to Danielle and she sends all her love to you all.
Mind yourselves and keep safe.
Ms. Colgan xxx
Girls, if you'd like pictures of what you are getting up to over the Easter holidays and the Isolation period to appear on the class blog, please send them to me and I'll put them up. Please remember though that I can't put up any with just you on your own in a picture.
Free Weaving Well- Being Journal.
As you all know, we have been doing Weaving Well-Being in school with Ms. McManus and now the company behind that programme have released a 'At Home' version to help while we are not at school. To get your free copy please click on link below.

STEM Ideas
See below some STEM ideas you can do with Lego or any building toys you may have. Please take pictures of any you have completed and send them to me so I can see your great work.
Potato Update!!!
I decided to plant our potatoes as it seems a while yet until we are back at school. Fingers crossed they grow and we will be able to taste them when we go back to school.
Breaking News...............
Well girls, we are officially on our Easter holidays even though it doesn't feel like it. I have been thinking all week of all the fun things we would have done this week and I am disappointed but then I remember that it is more important that we are all safe and healthy and spending time with our loved ones.
I hear that there is great work being done and girls I am so proud of each and every one of you as it has been a tough and challenging time but remember it WILL end.
I have been doing Bressie's meditation on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays and must say it is very good and helps during these difficult days.
Remember the better we follow the Government's safety messages, the quicker all this will be over. Keep washing those hands for the 20 seconds, keep up your social distancing and stay home.
Happy Easter to all my beautiful and wonderful girls in 4th class.
Missing you,
Ms. Colgan
Some pictures of all your hard work you are doing.
Girls, we are famous!!! Well done everyone xx
Keep washing those hands for 20 seconds.

Excellent work everyone.
Hello girls!
As you know, yesterday Leo Varadkar announced that we won't be going back to school just yet. This means we will be going back to school on the 20th April please God. I am disappointed that I won't see you on Monday and I do really miss all of you ( I know, can you believe it?!!!!!!!!). I will keep updating this page and on Monday I will upload homework for next week. There will be NO homework over the Easter holidays of course. However, if I come across any nice actvities that I feel you would enjoy, I'll post them here.
I know all of you are washing your hands regularly and keeping your social distance. I don't think I ever want to hear that term again when this is all over.
I hope you are practicing your tables- I bet I won't believe the improvement in them when we return and I also want you to keep up the reading. I don't mind what you read as long as you are doing something.
A little birdy has told me that lots of you are drawing, painting, baking with your dads, making cards and working out to Joe Wicks with big brothers acting as your personal trainers. This is great to hear.
Please remember to be patient with your siblings/parents and help out around the house. Remember the Kindness Elves are still monitoring all your kind deeds.
The potatoes are still alive and have grown lots. They must like my company!! I also planted the Sweet Peas that Agata's mum gave us to plant for around the willow. No sign of life from them yet but fingers crossed.
Anyway I will keep in touch on this platform and I'll hopefully see you all on the 20th April.

Germ Experiment
Last week we conducted an experiment to see how germs travel and which piece would have the most mould on it after handling it. Group 1 washed their hands and then handled it. Group 2 handled theirs with sanitised hands. Group 3 with just 'normal' hands after break time. Finally group 4 wiped the bread off the ground and tables. As you can see, the most mould is on the Group 4's piece of bread and Group 1's was the cleanest.

Multi- Cultural Assembly
Thank you to Dominika, Agata's mum, who came in and helped us make badges in our native countries colours using the technique of paper folding. It involved a lot of patience and determination from us all and we were able to wear them with pride to our special Multi- Cultural Assembly. Thanks again Dominika.

The Kindness Elves
This week, we read the story of The Kindness Elves who are always looking out for people who are spreading kindness around the world. Simple things like doing homework quickly and without being asked, giving hugs to our loved ones and sharing kind words with our classmates are some of the gestures they love to see. We were so surprised when, on Friday two elves Sparkle and Pop, came to visit us because they heard how kind our class can be. They have also come to set us a daily kindness challenge to help us be extra kind to the people around us in the run up to Christmas.
The first challenge they set on Friday was to give a hug to our parents/ guardians when we arrived home on Friday. We can't wait to see what tasks they set us this week.......................

-Maths Week 2019
This week was Maths Week across Ireland. For Maths Week, we were focusing on Data and the strand unit Graphs. We learned about the different types of graphs and why we use them. Therefore we decided to compile graphs on the results of the 8 quarter finalists of the Rugby World Cup and what points they ended up on in each of their pools.
On Tuesday we had homework based on line graphs from the website Manga High as they were offering a free trial during Maths Week.
On Wednesday, we had to use our Maths Eyes to locate places in our everyday environment that we see maths at work. Thank you to all the mums and dads that helped us email our pictures to teacher.
As a special activity for the week, we focused on our problem solving skills and were intoduced to the art of chess playing. We all enjoyed this and didn't realise we were working on our maths while playing it.
Lastly, on Friday we received a special certificate for taking part in Maths Week 2019.

Science Experiments.
How can you make cola clear?
Another experiment we did this month was to try and turn Cola clear. Impossible we hear you exclaim!!!! Not quite- all you need to do is add a few tablespoons of milk to it and leave for a few days. Go on, try it! Just don't drink it afterwards or you'll have an upset tummy.
What effect does sugar/acids have on your teeth?
This week we have been looking at teeth and how to keep them healthy. With that in mind, we conducted an experiment based on the effect of sugar and acids on our teeth. We used hard boiled eggs and placed an egg in each of the following (milk, fruit juice, vinegar and cola) and left them overnight. The shell of the egg would act like the enamel on our teeth. We made predictions on what would happen but even so, we were amazed at the results. Look at our pictures below!!!
